Supporters of Alberto Fujimori, the strongman who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, gathered outside a clinic where Fujimori was admitted after the Supreme Court overturned his pardon in December. Fujimori, 80, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for participating in the killing of 20 people by state-backed death squads. Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who served as Peru's president until March, allegedly pardoned Mr Fujimori for health reasons. Many Peruvians see him as trying to head off the threat of impeachment from People Power, the largest party in Congress led by Mr Fujimori's daughter Keiko. Mr. Kuczynski later resigned. Many Peruvians remember Mr. Fujimori as a leader who defeated the guerrilla Shining Path and curbed hyperinflation.
